Managing Anxiety

Discover helpful steps to reduce your anxiety and ease your mind.

Life feels pretty stressful these days, so we understand if you’ve been dealing with anxiety more lately than perhaps you have in the past. You may be looking for ways to better control your anxiety so it doesn’t control you. Whether you are feeling anxious right now or you are living with an anxiety disorder, our Bowie, MD, therapists hope you find these tips and tricks for easing anxiety helpful.

Stay Active

Exercise is an incredibly effective stress reliever. It can also boost endorphins, which can improve your mood. That’s why it’s a good idea for everyone, especially those with anxiety, to find physical activities that they enjoy. Getting regular physical activity most days of the week can help relieve stress and anxiety.

Avoid Alcohol

While alcohol may seem like it has the ability to relax and calm, it can actually make anxiety worse. If you are having trouble quitting alcohol or cutting back on drinking, this is something that our Bowie, MD, therapists can help you with. You don’t have to do it alone.

Practice Breathing Exercises

When you feel stressed out or anxious, you’re more likely to experience rapid, shallow breathing, which can make you feel like you’re hyperventilating. Luckily, some helpful breathing strategies, such as box breathing can help restore your breath and ease you into a state of calm. For example, box breathing involves breathing into the count of four, holding your breath for four, breathing out for four and holding your breath again for four. Box breathing can calm your nervous system and reduce stress.

Recognize Your Triggers

Does your anxiety flare up after a night on the town? Do you feel stressed when you’re about to give a speech or get on an airplane? It’s important to recognize what triggers your anxiety so you can speak with a mental health provider who can provide you with helpful coping strategies that can help you deal with your anxious feelings.

Prioritize Your Sleep

When people think of adopting healthier habits they often think of nutrition and exercise; however, sleep is an important habit and one that’s often overlooked. You’ll find that you’re better equipped to handle the stressors of the day when you get a full night of quality sleep. Make sure you are making your sleep a top priority and getting anywhere from 7-9 hours a night.
